Welcome to Rushen Abbey, a ruined Savignac/Cistercian Abbey built on the banks of the Silverburn river in the village of Ballasalla. Today the site is owned by the Isle of Man Government and is run as a Heritage Centre by Manx National Heritage. The site is open to the public from 10.00am to 5.00pm daily between April and October. An Entrance Fee is payable unless you belong to The Friends of Manx National Heritage, the National Trust, English Heritage, Scottish National Trust or Historic Scotland. This web site has been
set up by the Centre for Manx Studies who have
been brought in by Manx National Heritage to undertake the
archaeological
excavations. In due course the web site will grow to include details of
previous excavations, a history of Rushen Abbey and much much more. The Abbey was laid out
in a fairly conventional way, but does have a very small cloister area. ++++ 2005 DIG
