A brief history of Rushen Abbey

The 18th Century

1701 to 1759

Very little is known of this period, but it is possible (Butler 1988), that Deemster Moore built his house on the site of, or considerably renovated an earlier late 17 century building, using the Abbey as a convenient "quarry".

Robbing of the stone (c1760-1775)

Around 1765, Deemster Thomas Moore, a senior Manx judge, moved to Rushen Abbey and built a "fine country house".

1776 to 1799

From the 1770s to the 1830s Deemder Moore's house and out-buildings were either occupied by the Moores or leased to a series of tenants.
