DIG DIARY 2003 - Week Five

Thursday 10th July

Above are the two main areas uncovered this year.

Mark, Ju and Buster mattocking. The concrete sill is now clearly visible running across the centre of the picture.

Bethan, Sarah, Alex and Jenny get to work on the smaller area.

The ground was nice and soft after some heavy rain.

Ray and the gang have removed the concrete sill leaving just the bases of the cast iron posts (2) which went through it.

The ground is starting to dry out already.

The herb garden enjoyed the rain.

Friday 11th July

A fine sunny day. This photo shows the East Range of the Abbey: Chapter House (with grass on top) and in the background the slightly leaning church tower.

Sarah and Bethan have finished excavation of the odd rectangular hole full of bricks, stones, a sheet of tin, and lots of spiders!

The finished article.

And another view.

This is a large ditch full of rocks which can be seen in section in one of the trench extensions dug last year.

And this might be the same feature in the next trench extension!

Ju and Sophie find an area packed with small rocks whilst trowelling. A garden path?

On to Week Six....
