A brief history of Rushen Abbey

The Dissolution (1537-1611)

On the 24th June 1540, the Abbot, Henry Jackson, and six monks were expelled from Rushen Abbey. The Abbey closed and the buildings were stripped down, with much of the dressed stone being sold off to people who wised to construct new buildings in the neighbourhood.

Some of the pavement tiles were taken to Castletown. The silver belonging to the Abbey was bought by the Earl of Derby for 37 pounds, 8 shillings and 8 pence.

The Abbey was however technically the last to be completely dissolved, as the rents from the lands were collected but not paid over to the English Crown. This continued  until in 1611 James I of England granted all the properties to the 6th Earl of Derby.
