A brief history of Rushen Abbey

Farming (1611-1663)

There were frequent changes of ownership of the land between the 1650s and the 1770s, including an attempt in about 1675 to by the land to construct King William's College. Several changes of ownership and tenancies (Cumming, 1857) suggest a continued agricultural role for the site, while the fabric of the building was sold off (Cumming, 1866).

The excavations carried out by Butler in 1978-9 suggests that the east end of the church was removed shortly after the dissolution and a cobbled yard created in the area around the Pigeon Tower.
