A brief history of Rushen Abbey

Jam Factory

A jam-factory and fruit bottling business was probably started in the 1840s or 1850s, on a site well known for its orchards for some 40 or 50 years.

During the 1870s, the business run by Messrs Woods and Hardon, is reported as having shipped 14 tons of bottled fruit around the world every year. They won a gold medal at an exhibition in Liverpool in 1886. It was probably at about this time that the vinery was set up.

The jam factory continued in operation until the mid 1970s.
