A brief history of Rushen Abbey "A monastery of St. Leoc". There is evidence from documents at Furness Abbey (in Cumbria) that a monastery was already in existence dedicated to a early Celtic missionary called St. Leoc, and that it was after this dedication that the parish name of Malew derived. A (much later) tradition has it that a monastery had been founded here in 1096 by Macmarus, the chieftain ruling the South (of Man) who was defeated during the strife following the death of Godred Crovan.
